If you’re starting an online store in Zimbabwe, platform choice is the most important decision you’ll make. Pick wrong and you’ll rebuild in 12 months. Here’s the honest comparison based on what we’ve actually built and maintained.
WooCommerce (our recommendation for most sellers)
Cost: Hosting ~US$100/year + optional plugins US$0–300. Strengths: EcoCash and Paynow plugins exist and work, you own everything, infinite customisation, strong SEO, works with WordPress content. Weaknesses: needs ongoing updates, you’re responsible for security, steeper learning curve than Shopify.
Shopify
Cost: US$29–299/month + transaction fees + currency conversion. Strengths: easiest to set up, beautiful templates, reliable infrastructure, great mobile app. Weaknesses: no native Zimbabwean payment integration (requires third-party gateways with higher fees), monthly costs compound, locked into Shopify forever, pays in USD only, foreign exchange costs add up.
Wix / Squarespace
Cost: US$23–59/month. Strengths: very easy for non-technical users, beautiful out of the box. Weaknesses: no Zimbabwean payment integration without complex workarounds, limited for Zim-specific needs, SEO is weaker than WooCommerce.
Custom-built
Cost: US$5,000+. Strengths: any feature is possible, best performance, you own everything, integrations with any system. Weaknesses: expensive upfront, need a developer for changes, longer build time.
The honest answer for most Zimbabwean SMEs
WooCommerce. Native Zimbabwean payment support, pay in USD once (hosting) and forever, own all your data, scales from 10 products to 10,000, works with every shipping/delivery service, and SEO is excellent.
We’ve built WooCommerce stores for Luipardal and other Zimbabwean sellers. See the case studies or request a quote for your store.
