Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the single highest-ROI marketing channel available to Zimbabwean SMEs. It’s free, it puts you on Google Maps, and it drives customers who are actively searching “[your service] near me” directly to your phone.
Yet 70% of Zimbabwean businesses we audit either haven’t claimed their listing, or have one that’s 30% complete and hasn’t been updated in years. Here’s how to fix that.
Step 1: Claim your profile
Go to business.google.com. Search for your business. If it exists already (Google may have auto-created one), claim it. If not, create a new one.
Step 2: Verify
Google will verify your business by sending a postcard to your physical address with a verification code. In Zimbabwe this takes 2–4 weeks typically. Some business categories get phone or email verification — take that if offered.
Step 3: Complete every field
Every missing field costs you ranking. Fill out:
- Business name (exactly as registered, no keyword stuffing)
- Category (pick the most specific, then add secondary categories)
- Address (exactly as it is on your website and everywhere else)
- Service area (cities you serve)
- Hours (detailed, including holidays)
- Phone (use one that Zimbabweans can actually call — +263 format)
- Website URL
- Description (750 characters, include your service + city naturally)
- Services list (add every service with description and pricing)
Step 4: Photos (this matters more than you think)
Listings with 100+ photos get 520% more calls than those without. Upload:
- Exterior of your building (from the street)
- Interior shots (reception, workspace, products)
- Team photos with names
- Work in progress / behind the scenes
- Finished work / products / outcomes
- Logo and cover image
Step 5: Ask for reviews (ethically)
Reviews are the strongest Local Pack ranking signal after proximity. After you complete a project, send clients a direct link to leave a review. Respond to every review within 48 hours — positive and negative.
Step 6: Weekly posts
Google Posts (updates, offers, events) signal to Google that your listing is active. Post at least weekly — project updates, tips, photos, offers. Each post is indexed.
Step 7: Monitor Q&A
Anyone can ask a question on your profile. Answer them promptly. Pre-seed common questions (“Do you accept EcoCash?”, “What are your hours?”) by asking a colleague to post and then answering.
Done well, a Google Business Profile can generate more leads than a paid Google Ads campaign — for free. Need help setting yours up?
